“Lisa usually always has a positive attitude in school. We appreciate her artistic contributions.” I’ve always loved this comment from one of my grade school teachers. As a foster child, art class was my safe harbor from the storms. Drawing, painting and creating allowed me to escape into a world of colors, textures and possibilities. When I was 10, my foster mother taught me to knit. Together we made a small blanket. As I got older, I knit on and off, still making blankets and scarves. In 2017, I began to consistently knit as a way of coping with her passing. Since then, I’ve taught myself to knit in the round and crochet, both of which led to the creation of Misfit Kitties, Misfit Bunnies, and Chonks, among other items. Knitting is my meditation. It brings me so much peace and comfort. What gives me the most joy is hearing how each knitted and crocheted piece brings a bit of happiness into the lives of the folks who “adopt” them!
